Imagine Australian boardrooms, classrooms, courtrooms, newsrooms and even operating rooms…church pulpits, cricket pitches, chambers of parliament…colleges and companies, farms and families, malls and museums … imagine all of them filled with a new generation of thoughtful, well-rounded, creative men and women exercising reflective, responsible leadership. Imagine every cultural sphere influenced by people who think critically, communicate effectively, and exemplify moral character. Imagine the difference such people could make for tomorrow’s culture!
This vision has inspired a bold initiative in higher education called the Millis Institute. We believe this initiative has the potential not only to form thoughtful leaders but also to influence the way Australians think about education. The Institute’s approach differs in many ways from that of the standard university. Over the following weeks and months, this fortnightly e-newsletter will unpack those differences and unveil its purpose.
We’re in Phase One, the phase of laying foundations and establishing pillars. These pillars will ground the Millis Institute’s identity and structure as it develops. They include:
These pillars have animated me for a long while. When my wife and I were students at Duke University (North Carolina) in the 1990s, we discerned a sense of calling that has guided us ever since. It has become for us somewhat of a “life task,” and I articulate it in terms of “helping to shape a Christ-centred residential learning community.” It’s exciting to have this dream take shape in the Millis Institute at Christian Heritage College. Here faith and learning - the heritage of Athens and Jerusalem - embrace, just as the cross and the pillar join to form our logo.
Over the coming months, we hope that the Millis Institute prompts a conversation about how Australia can cultivate excellent learners and leaders. This newsletter is one way that you can join us in rethinking and re-imagining this crucial task. Stay tuned!
